Furnace Filter Maintenance
How often should you replace furnace filters? Should the color be the indication for when it ought to be replaced? To keep your furnace running efficiently, it has to be replaced once a month. That sounds costly doesn’t it? It’s not in the appearance of the filter. After all, the particles it collected were hardly visible. The same holds true for the amount that has accumulated in the filter.
Your eyes are not the perfect instruments to assess whether or not the filter should be replaced unless you’re looking at your heating bill. You can see a marked difference in your bill when you change the filters periodically as opposed to whenever you just see fit. The same goes for the filters in your air conditioner. Fortunately, filters in central heating systems need only to be replaced in the winter season.
Before you make a replacement, determine what filter size will fit your furnace. There are a number of specialized filters available in the market. Some are disposable and others reusable. The reusable ones are not intended to last forever and you will also have to replace them after a couple of uses. They would have to be replaced after a year and two at most. Washable filters can be cheaper but you have to wash them every month.
You have to thoroughly wash the washable filters under running water until the dirt and other impurities are gone. This should keep your furnace run smoothly and efficiently. Regularly cleaning the filter will make the fans run better. Clogged up filters will let unclean air circulate in your home and will certainly be more costly to run as the furnace will consume more energy.
You may use filters that are also made by the furnace manufacturer. These are specifically designed by manufacturers to work best with their brand of furnace. These could be purchased online and they are relatively cheap. You can also purchase them from the manufacturer. There are many kinds of filters so do be particular about the type your furnace requires so you can get filters that would match your furnace. Guessing what filter you need would likely result in the getting the wrong size. That would be a total waste.
The furnace can work without any filter but that would expose you and your family to airborne health hazards. There is no need to suffer from a bad choice right within your own home. Keep your family safe and your energy bills reasonable by maintaining furnace air filters well.
