How and Why to Install a Furnace Filter



Traditionally, furnace filters were built to protect the fans and furnace. With the advancement in the technology and awareness about the quality of air, a lot of filters are being installed in order to reduce exposure to the particles which may affect the health of an individual. These days a wide range of furnace filters is available in the market and sometimes it becomes confusing which one is suitable for you.

It is very important to clean or replace the furnace filter once in a month. By this you not only increase the efficiency of you furnace, but it also helps in reducing the electric bill. Cleaning or changing the furnace filter is very easy thing.

How to clean or replace the furnace filter -:

1. Firstly check the area ahead of the furnace because many a times it is a breeding space for dust particles. Clean the area in front of furnace before removing the filter.

2. Then locate the service panel which is usually on the lower front or side of the furnace.

3. Turning off the furnace, gently pull down or pop open the panel with your hands. Usually no tool is required for this job.

4. Then locate the filter and gently remove it.

5. Check for the dusty buildup on the furnace filter. In case you are not able to see through it, then you need to replace or clean it.

6. A lot of times furnaces are fitted with filters made of reusable plastic frame. In such case, simply take the filter out and use a water hose to rinse away the dust. Then, after drying it, replace it.

7. In case you have a filter of disposal cardboard frame type, then you need to buy one of the same sizes from your local hardware store (Wal-Mart, Home Depot or Lowe’s) and replace it.

Warnings and Tips -:

To keep the allergies away from your home, buy an allergenic reduction filter.
Replace you filter after every month or at least once in a season so as to keep your home safe and healthy.

Always install a clean filter.

Make sure you turn off the furnace before replacing the filter.
