There are varies ways that anemia is treated all depending of the severity of the condition. Anemia affects 30%-50% of the American population and is an on going problem that needs to be taken seriously. Many of us maybe suffering without knowing, the symptoms often go undiscovered for months and only when they become serious do they finally show. Here are a few ways anemia can be treated.
Iron supplements By taking supplements of iron we are putting back the essential iron we need in our body to function. Lack of iron in the body can be due to diet or poor absorption of iron. Iron tablets should be taken before eating and coffee or tea should not be consumed shortly before or after taking a tablet as they can inhibit absorption.
Vitamin B12 Vitamin B12 plays a vital role in the production of red blood cells increasing your intake of vitamin b12 is essential for keeping your blood healthy. Vitamin B12 can be injected into the body to help with the problem faster.
Folic Acid is not just used in pregnancy, it is great for helping cure anemia too. You can take it in tablet form but it is also available to be injected in more serious conditions. Folic acid is essential to creating and maintaining new cells.
For more serious types of anemia the treatment is a lot more drastic, it is quite rare that these measures need to be taken and in mild form of anemia it is not necessary.
Blood Transfusion Only used in very serious forms of anemia when treatment is urgent. The correct blood type will be matched to that of the patient and transferred through an IV. This helps get red blood cells into the body fast to help keep the oxygen flowing around the body. When anemia gets this bad a heart attack is more likely to occur.
Bone marrow Transplant Bone marrow is what produces the blood cells, it is a spongy-like tissue that is inside our bones. When the bone marrow malfunctions and does not produce enough red blood cells then a transplant from a healthy donor may be necessary.
