How to Use a Neti Pot

Using a neti pot is a very simple process, however new users will need to learn these few tips to help them get the best nasal flush. The first thing is to mix the saline solution. There are a variety of neti pot salt products out there. New users should shop for an isotonic solution. An isotonic solution simply means that the resulting saline concentration will be similar to the body’s own salt content.

The neti pot should be clean. Place the recommended amount of salt in the bottom of the neti pot and fill it with warm water. Never use hot water. The water should feel warm to the touch. As you fill the pot, swirl it so that all the salt is dissolved. Once the salt is dissolved, begin the flushing process by leaning forward over a sink. Press the neti pot spout against your nostril and slowly tip the pot to start a flow of water through your nostrils. Keep your face close to the sink to help prevent splashing as the water runs from the opposite nostril. It will help if you keep your face turned towards the neti pot so as to help align the spout properly.

The user will feel the water flow into the nose, however there should not be any discomfort. Breathing through the mouth is still possible and as long as the user does not swallow, the water will stay in the sinuses. It is possible to even talk while doing the flush. The objective is to use the force of gravity to keep the water flowing until the neti pot is empty.

The saline formula irrigates the sinuses and washes away excessive and or dried mucus. Once one side is flushed, you will simply repeat the process from the other nostril. Give it a good scrubbing with an antibacterial dish washing liquid and then be sure the pot is dry when you store it. Neti pots can be shared with others as long as it is properly cleaned after each use. Never use a neti pot that someone has just used without cleaning it. If there is any doubt about the cleanliness, simply clean it before use.

With time and use, you will be able to learn how to hold the neti pot and align it to your nostril as you slowly tilt it to get the water to flow.
