Neti Pot Problems
There are three main problems that can occur when you use a neti pot. Most of these are easily overcome.
First, there is the problem of the water not flowing into the nose correctly. Typically this is due to the fact that you have inserted the pot in a way that blocks off the spout. Usually that happens when someone pushes the spout too hard against the inside of the nose. In order to solve this, have someone observe you, and help you angle the pot in a way that will allow the water to flow properly.
Another problem people have is water not draining out of the nose the way they expect. If the water does not flow out of the other nostril, it may be headed to the back of the throat. This is acceptable, just do not swallow the fluid. Simply spit it out into the sink. This problem can occur when there is exceptional blockage within the sinus cavity, or it can be due to improper angling of the head. Try to tilt your head as far to the side as you can. Ideally, your nostrils will be aligned vertically. If you are not tilting far enough, the water may drain to the back of the throat. This is not necessarily bad, but it could be an indication of a problem with your sinuses.
The third problem that people have is a stinging sensation when using their neti pot. This is usually the result of the makeup of the solution they are using. If the water is not mixed to the proper pH, or salinity, it can be uncomfortable. There are some pre-mixed solutions which are called “hypertonic”, and those have a higher concentration of salt than the nasal lining. They are designed to help dry the sinuses, but some people are sensitive to the feeling. Other solutions have additives other than salt which can sting.
