Pleated Furnace Filters Do a Better Job

Your home furnace and air conditioning system probably uses furnace filters. Typically, any HVAC system that forces air through ductwork will have a filter between the air return vent in the wall and the furnace. This filter is designed to protect the system and keep dirt and debris out of the mechanics so that it will last longer. Though they’re called furnace filters, they also filter the air that is pushed through your home when you run the air conditioning. If you didn’t use any type of filter, the furnace wouldn’t last as long because the dirt and debris would cause problems, and you’d have more dust and dirt in your home’s air.

If you’re used to using the most inexpensive filter that’s just loosely meshed fiberglass, consider pleated furnace filters to keep your system even cleaner. Pleated filters are simply filters that have been folded to make them look like an accordion. All this really does is give you more surface area to catch dirt, dust and maybe allergens, depending on the type of filter you purchase.

Anything that’s flat like a piece of paper, that’s the same size as something when it’s folded, will be smaller than the folded item when stretched out. So pleated filters simply offer more filtration in the same amount of space. And that will keep your furnace system a bit cleaner and keep more dirt and dust out of your air.

There are many different types of pleated filters that don’t cost much more than standard flat ones, though you can spend a great deal of money on an expensive brand, if you choose. Some with HEPA filtration can cost $20 or $30 because they filter out particles that are between.3 and 1 microns in size, while the most inexpensive flat fiberglass brands only catch a small percentage of particles that are several times larger, while letting all of the small ones go straight through.
