Swine Flu – How Worried Should We Be?

Since mid-April when we were first stunned with the news of a potentially devastating flu epidemic called Swine Flu this topic has remained a hot item. Originally it was feared that this unknown virus would sweep across the country causing a large number of deaths. Although at this date it has not been nearly as serious or widespread as was formerly believed possible, it is still spreading throughout the nation and has been the cause of at least 20 deaths. In addition, there have been many thousands of confirmed cases. In Utah, where I reside, the first death attributed to Swine Flu was documented on May 20 and in the two and a half weeks since the number of those inflicted has risen to 713, which is double the number of the preceding week. Health experts are uncertain as to why some areas of the country seem to be experiencing a reduction in the number of confirmed cases while others areas are rapidly increasing.

So what exactly is this mysterious and frightening disease that has everyone so fearful? Originally, this was a respiratory ailment found only in pigs and did not affect humans. This new and alarming strain of Swine Flu that dominated the news of late April through mid-May is a sub-type which researchers speculate mutated when a pig became infected with a bird strain of the flu which then enabled the virus to infect other mammals.

The symptoms of this illness are; fatigue, fever, coughing and lack of appetite. Some cases include sore throat, runny nose, vomiting and diarrhea. It is a very contagious strain and people who suspect they may be infected should stay away from others while they recuperate. In general, the incubation period is from 2-5 days. The best suggested protection is the same as with other viral infections, frequent and adequate washing of hands. We’ve been repeatedly reminded that the proper length of time to spend washing our hands is the same as would take us to sing through the ABC song. This advise applies not only to the pre-schoolers who are learning this song, but to all of us.

Although there is no specific vaccine for this ailment, some people have benefitted from taking either
Tamiflu or Relenza, both of which are anti-viral drugs. The administering of these drugs have seemed to lessen the severity and duration of this flu for some individuals.

Thankfully, we’ve so far avoided the horrific outbreak of this menacing ailment that was feared by so many, but we’re not out of the woods yet. It would be wise for everyone to take precautions by the frequent washing of hands and avoiding being around people who are obviously ill. Those who are presently suffering from this flu should remain isolated from others until they are recovered. Hopefully, soon the worst will be over.
